Learn How To Fight!

By Glenn Zwiers

There are a lot of self defense systems that claim you will be able to learn how to fight, but each and every self defense system will have a different interpretation of what fight means to them. Some systems believe that a fight is a sports orientated match between two people, others a wrestling match on the ground. However, is this a true reflection of what the common person is searching for when wanting to learn how to fight?

If you are like most people you are probably looking for a RBSD (reality based self defense) system that deals with grabs, punches, kicks, weapon attacks etc. Situations that happen in real life, tournament matches. Situations that dictate street survival tactics not sports orientated techniques. Remember, sport has rules and boundaries, it is a fair and even playing field. In the street there are no rules just your survival at stake.

Unfortunately, finding a good RBSD system can be like finding a needle in a hay stack. I have compiled some good guidelines below to help you make the right choice when choosing a RBSD system

— Does the instructor have any real world experience?

— Is the teaching method easy to learn and logical?

— Does the system cover both attack and defense with all weapon systems?

— Does the system keep kicking as low as possible?

— Does the system teach you mental training aspects?

— Does the system teach verbal conflict resolution?

— Does the system practice and teach dirty tactics such as eye gouges?

— Does the system practice tactics from standing, knee high and on the ground?

— Is the primary edge weapon and impact weapon defense tactic to grab the limb?

— If learning firearm defense, does the trainer have any credible firearms training?

— Does the school train in shoes?

If you have answered yes to all of these you have probably found a good self defense school. Although you will be the final judge because these are just guidelines.

Remember a good self defense training system covers all possibilities that may happen in the real world. This includes compromised positions like knee high and ground tactics. A good system will make sure that everything is realistic and that you are attacking targets on the body that will allow you to escape and evade the situation as quickly as possible.

Your primary aim in learning how to fight is to protect yourself. It doesn’t have to look good to be effective. Always remember that movies are movies and what you see there is not a real fight. Real fights are dangerous and messy by nature due to all the unpredictability of the situation. Sport fights are clean due to all the predictability, after you both follow rules in sport.

About the Author: If you are after a recommendation on where to learn how to fight with a quality RSBD training system, the very best RSBD system is the SFCA close quarter combat system. It is simple, realistic and straight to the point. The teaching methods allow for rapid acceleration in your training and everything is based around the real world thugs, not the sports fighters.
