Selecting The Right Deo: How Your Scent Matters

Submitted by: Arnab Roy Choudhury

In terms of your personal health, the scent of the body deo you choose makes no difference. That said, it can matter to other people. Some deodorants offer more powerful scents than others, and the power of that perfume may offend others more than your natural odor. Furthermore, research often finds that scent plays a relevant role while making first impressions and attracting that significant other.

Jesse Bering, writing for Scientific American, explains: One of the most important target chemicals believed to play a role in modulating people s attraction toward others is called androstadienone, a compound found in axillary secretions. When women are exposed to this chemosignal, it activates regions of their brains associated with attention, social cognition, emotional processing and sexual behavior. The effects of androstadienone on female arousal were clearly documented in a 2008 article in the journal Hormones and Behavior.

While we don’t know the full extent to which scent plays a role in attraction and arousal, research indicates some significance. For that reason, excessively masking your natural scent could become a detriment. Not only can you negate some of the positive effects of pheromones, but if your romantic partner associates you with a specific scent you purchased then you run the risk of smelling like another person if you ever change it.

There are a few things you might want to consider when choosing a fragrance for him. Stay away from Triclosan. Many deodorants use an added Triclosan to kill odor-causing bacteria. The wide use of Triclosan may also be promoting a Triclosan drug resistance in that same bacteria. Drug resistant bacteria reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics and thus reduce the tools we have to treat infections or prevent the spread of infection in hospitals. In addition, Triclosan has been detected in many U.S. waterways and is extremely toxic to aquatic wildlife.

Avoid Aluminum. Aluminum compounds in deodorant are the culprits in yellow armpit stains. Aluminum salts, such as aluminum chlorohydrate, were some of the first antiperspirants developed to reduce perspiration. Newer and more effective aluminum zirconium chlorohydrate-glycine complexes have been developed and are used in several brands of solid and gel antiperspirants. These ingredients have the added benefit of having antimicrobial activity, meaning they also act as deodorants. There is inconclusive evidence that aluminum-containing compounds increase the risk of certain neurological diseases (e.g., Alzheimer s disease).

What about those natural deodorants and antiperspirants? Most don’t work because they lack ingredients that are known to reduce sweat, says Adelaide A. Hebert, M.D., a professor of dermatology and pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. The main advantage however is that natural deodorants don’t contain parabens, PEGs, synthetic ingredients including hormone-disrupting fragranceand antibacterials, petrochemicals, or aluminum compounds.

The human body has evolved to downplay the importance of olfactory processing in the brain, we do know that only the alcohol in a body deo actually deodorizes. Because you’ll pay much less for a bottle of rubbing alcohol, and it simply kills bad-smelling bacteria rather than masking your natural scent, you might prefer to skip the expensive stick at the drug store and opt for that simple option instead. There are more than enough options when it comes to choosing fragrances for him.
